Dr. Whitfield is a fellowship-trained endocrine surgeon and is a member of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons. He is one of the first surgeons in the country to have obtained a Focused Practice Designation (FPD) in Adult Complex Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery (ACTPS). The FPD in ACTPS is a designation awarded by the American Board of Medical Specialties that recognizes diplomates who have focused their practice on the treatment of patients with benign, malignant, functional, and nonfunctional thyroid and parathyroid tumors. This also encompasses the management of patients with locally advanced thyroid cancer, aggressive histologic subtype, and inherited endocrine syndromes. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Whitfield has served as an examination consultant of the Adult Complex Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery Focused Practice Designation Examination Committee for the American Board of Surgery.
